"Hiding in plain sight, the old man crept through the halls of the palace, his ancient heart keeping pace with the shifting of his black eyes." (page 1, line 1)
An epic fantasy. A quest, hidden identities, magic, knights, kings, queens and a princess. After a slow start (which was really the only negative) I was engrossed in the story, wrapped up in the characters and dying to know what would happen next.
When we first meet Rose she's young, being raised by strangers, ignorant as to her parentage, and keeping a secret from everyone she loves. As the story progresses and secrets are revealed Rose find her feet and embrace her identity.
The world building Chase did was fabulous. The descriptions, the way the world worked, how Chase put me right in the middle of it, I loved it all. I thought it was extraordinarily well written, had a complex and well developed plot, well rounded characters, and the beginning of a sweet romance.
I already had the next book, The Remedy, and I tried to hold off on reading it, I had some idea about delayed gratification or something, but I only managed a few days before diving into the second book which I liked even more than The Ryn. I will definitely be on the lookout for anything written by Serena Chase.
