{Adult Fiction Review} Guardians of Stone (Relic Seekers Novel, Book 1) by Anita Clenney

{Adult Fiction Review} Guardians of Stone (Relic Seekers Novel, Book 1) by Anita Clenney

Kendall Morgan is a human bloodhound. Spending her childhood hunting relics with her ambitious archeologist father, she knew the two of them shared a sixth sense for the history and location of objects—sometimes even people. What she didn’t know was that their paranormal gift could ultimately be their undoing.

After the tragic plane crash that killed her father as well as her childhood best friend, Kendall dedicated her life to finding and protecting relics. When mysterious, sexy billionaire Nathan Larraby hires her for his latest expedition—the search for four powerful relics —she’s thrown into a world of high-octane danger. He sends brooding mercenary Jake Stone to watch Kendall’s back, but he may have created danger of a different kind.

As the team chases down clues, a man called the Reaper makes a play for the artifacts and will stop at nothing to put them to his own sinister use. What’s worse is that Nathan hasn’t told the whole story, and the dark secrets he’s keeping could cost them the mission…and their lives.

{Review} An adventurous romp around Italy complete with catacombs and skeletons. There is an Indiana Jones vibe but Indiana Jones is a girl, with paranormal abilities. Intriguing premise but nothing spectacular.

The characters were likable, interesting and complex. There was a strange family dynamic between Kendall, Jake and Nathan, ties of obligation, affection, loyalty. But it's clear there are secrets between them and it's interesting to watch their interactions.

There was romance, but surprisingly little, and it was surprisingly chaste. It's not without complications, not to mention the jealous and protective Nathan. It's not love at first sight. Jake and Kendall are both prickly and defensive because they're stuck with each other and neither that happy about it. I liked that Kendall didn't allow Jake to walk over her and I liked Jake's teasing attitude.
"Do you always stare at women's legs, Mr. Stone?" she whispered.
"Only when they're worth looking at."

There was quite a bit of mystery and it was well crafted. I spent a lot of time trying to figure out motives, trying to figure out who is the bad guy, and who can be trusted instead of thinking 'it's the insert character name here' people, haven't you figured it out yet?'

I'm curious about what will happen next, about Nathan's secrets, well, all their secrets, about what's going to happen between Kendall and Jake but I'm not racing out to buy the next book.
